ITAA Final project submission | Petals for strength

When designing and constructing my garment, I wanted to incorporate the colors of the Ukrainian flag to show my support for their country. An important symbol for them during this time is a yellow and blue flower, because the sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine. The voluptuous skirt symbolizes overlaying flower petals using yellow and blue cotton, while the top has melted crayons running down all sides. This element represents crude oil polluting our waterways. Once these harmful chemicals reach our water streams, they become a multitude of assorted colors. My three-piece garment incorporates 100% cotton; a natural fiber. Although cotton is not 100% eco-friendly, the use of natural fibers shifts us closer to creating unlimited sustainable clothing. Although the crop top and skirt are statement pieces, the jacket is reversible, which enables the creation of many different outfits. The sharp shoulders and style seen in the jacket represent the strength of Ukraine during this time and the internal armor that they wear. My garment incorporates an immense amount of texture, through the crayon and volume of the petal skirt. The jacket and skirt both have bold elements that balance out the more simplistic style of the top. This also means that the jacket and skirt have a strong emphasis using texture, shape, and size. The jacket and top indicate a sleek form while the skirt is quite large and feminine.
